1917: One of the Best War Movies Ever Made

Inspired by true events, 1917 is one of the finest war movies of all time and has won several awards, including three Oscars.

Released in 2019, the movie focuses on the dangerous mission assigned to two British soldiers during World War I.

The movie is a classic portrayal of how difficult the life of a soldier is.

To protect others, they have to put themselves at risk.

That’s what happened in this movie, too.

Lance Corporal Blake and Lance Corporal Schofield were assigned a very difficult and important mission in which they must succeed; otherwise, a lot of innocent lives will be lost.

Surprisingly, Blake’s elder brother’s life was also at risk, as he would also be a member of the group of those soldiers who were in danger.

So he was completely unstoppable during this mission.

He did his best but unfortunately lost his life during the journey.

Blake was a

  • brave soldier,
  • good brother,  and
  • polite person.

He died while saving the life of another person who turned out to be an enemy.

Even in his last moments, he was constantly worried about his brother and the mission that was assigned to him.

His death scene was very painful, and the conversation he had with Schofield was just heartbreaking.

Along with brotherhood, this movie also displayed the great bond of friendship.

During that whole scene, one moment simply brought tears to our eyes, and that is:

Blake: "Am I dying?"

Schofield: "Yes, I think you are."

This was such a powerful scene, as after his death, he was more determined to complete this task successfully.

His friend’s death and his request to protect his brother and the others made him more motivated to fulfill his duty.

After that, we saw a different version of Schofield.

This scene came right after Blake’s death.

We can see clearly how serious he is about the success of his task.

We realized at this moment that nothing would be able to stop him.

He successfully completes this difficult task all alone, in which he has to fight against extreme weather conditions, hunger, and thirst.

It would not be wrong to say "Mission Impossible," but his complete devotion helped him.

There were a lot of moments in which he found himself all broken and helpless but still chose to keep going no matter what.

There is no doubt that being a good soldier is not an easy thing.

He had the option to give up, and that could be justified as well, but he took complete responsibility and put his life in danger to protect others.

We can see the pain in his eyes and how tired he is now.

(Felling from the River and Army Song Scene)

All his struggles and sacrifices make us fall in love with his character and the movie itself.

Other than the story,

What makes the 1917 movie so good?

There are a lot of reasons for it, including:

  • Overall presentation,
  • Simplicity,
  • Sound effects.

Let me begin with the sound effects first.

There were a lot of scenes in which there was complete silence, but suddenly something came up unexpectedly that started with suspicious background music.

The film was about silence, but with a great mix of music that made the audience even more fall for it.

Two of those moments that give me goosebumps are:

  1. Schofield got shot.
  2. Schofield fell into the river.

Let’s have a look at the second one:

No matter how many times you watch this scene, it will still be able to grab your complete attention.

Great scene and the character is wonderfully played by George MacKay.

He was a perfect fit for this character.

Now let’s talk about the

The splendid ending of the movie

After all the challenges, when Schofield finally reached the destination and stopped the attack, no one was listening to him. It was very hard for him to make them believe him, but he didn’t give up.

Even after being so tired, he gave his full potential and energy to accomplish his mission.

This scene:

This scene has no dialogue, but it still speaks a lot.

The tiredness, fear, determination, and energy in his eyes are quite obvious.

Nothing can beat this one.

Another thing is the moment with Joseph Blake, played by Richard Madden.

There is no doubt that he is an extraordinary actor.

He came for just a few moments, but the acting and the performance he gave made us all speechless.

Soldiers are trained so that they have to pull themselves together no matter what.

The news of his younger brother's unexpected death broke him, but he stood strong in front of Schofield.

He was completely shocked and had a lot of pain, which could be seen in his eyes. In the previous second, he was excited to meet his brother, but the very next, he finds out he is no more.

Of course, that’s not easy, and Richard Madden was able to present that with his few-minute scene.

When we are Robb Stark from Game of Thrones, we must not forget Doctor Strange.

Benedict Cumberbatch was also in the movie for a single scene but give such a great performance.

1917 includes guest appearances from some of the best actors in the industry who all gave speechless performances that will always be remembered.

This movie is not just restricted to the lives of soldiers but also covers a lot of other topics, including determination, taking responsibility, never giving up, friendship, brotherhood, and more.

a wonderful and beautiful movie so far.
