Where the Cowards Sing: A Twisted Fairytale Story
Where the Cowards Sing, based on Delia Owens' best-selling novel, has proven to be one of the most timeless films of all time. The film is extremely close to nature and contains elements of mystery, romance, greenery, crime, bravery, and the wild.
It tells the story of Kya (also known as Marsh Girl), a young girl.
The film revolves around her life and survival while living all alone in the marsh.
We've seen her dark childhood, in which his father was portrayed as abusive, beating, and misbehaving with his wife and children. As a result, all of the family members left one by one, leaving Kya as the only one left behind with him.
For many families, this is a grim reality. The difference is that some choose to stay, but some choose to leave for good.
Kya’s family members picked the second option.
Of course, she didn’t have a good childhood, and yet it was filled with a lot of pain and loneliness. She loved her mother a lot, and until her last breath, she wished to see her just once.
Kya's father's behaviour changed a little after everyone left, and he taught her a lot of things, including fishing, hunting, and many other survival techniques. But after all, he was still the same, and one day he left her too.
Kya was just ten then, and she was all on her own.
At this point, her life was totally changed, as she had to survive in this toxic world alone.
The actress who played young Kya, Jojo Regina, has done a fantastic job, as we can see all the emotions and pain in her eyes.
Great performance by her!
Now for the rest of the story and adulthood:
Played by Daisy Edgar, Kya was shown as a very innocent but strong and independent girl. Since childhood, she has been living alone and managing to make some money for herself.
We were shown two of her love interests:
- Tate
- Chase
The film's plot began with Chase's murder, for which Kya was arrested and held in police custody.
Taking a look at Chase first
He was a young man from a powerful family who appeared to have fallen in love with Kya.At first, Kya was not into him at all and was even annoyed and uncomfortable by his presence, but later, things changed.
Even though it was clear that she didn’t love him at all, she still decided to be with him to reduce the loneliness, and Chase seemed to be very interested in her.
However, that wasn’t the case.
Chase turned out to be a jerk. Yes, he was interested in her, but with the wrong intentions.
On the other hand, Tate was a sweet guy, which Kya had known since they were kids. He was a teacher and friend, and he motivated her to do better for herself.
Kya was a very talented girl who was very close to nature and art.
She has excellent sketching skills, and Tate was sure that he could achieve recognition and success in the real world through her skills.
Both of them truly loved each other, but time tore them apart.
The Best Movie Characters
The movie shows us three great people who were good to Kya:
Kya’s Lawyer: Tom Milton
Since his first appearance, he has supported and comforted her in every possible way. He gave us all the time and space to put her trust in him to tell her side of the story.
One of the film's more humble characters!
Mabel and Jumplin
Kya had always considered them to be her parents. They cared about her and always treated her well.
The outside world was never good to her, as her own words in her starting scenes were:
I never hated them,
They hated me.
That’s true.
The world never accepted her and made fun of her. At that time, these two were the only ones who supported and gave hope to her.
Even though it was the tragic story of a young girl, the way it was represented made it a fairytale. It really showed us that one can stand up for themselves even if no one is around.
Kya did have a tough life, but that makes her strong, wise, and independent.
She was the hero of her life.
